Dear viewers,
The IRS taking your house is hopefully something that doesn’t happen to you. But in the hit comedy Happy Gilmore that is him and his grandmother's reality. Released on February 16, 1996 and directed by Dennis Dugan this movie is bound to make you laugh. The movie was written by Adam Sandler and Tim Herlihy also starring Adam Sandler, Christopher McDonald, and Carl Weathers. The movie is about a man named Happy Gilmore who is playing golf to try to get his grandma's house back after the IRS took it. The main antagonist of this movie is a pro golfer named “Shooter McGavin” who doesn’t want Happy to win the golf tournament so Shooter can get a golden jacket. The movie is so funny and exciting that it should be recognized as one of the best comedies of all time.
The movie had great acting. Adam Sandler easily played a grown yet immature man, who manages to grow up and help others. Adam Sandler also made great voices in the movie that show the immaturity of Happy. Ben Stiller also had great acting, being an evil guy who is putting old people to hard labor probably isn’t something you want to be known for. Christopher McDonald playing Shooter McGavin was absolutely incredible. He played the perfect role of a pro golfer trying to make a bigger name for himself. All the scenes where Shooter was being crazy or straight evil were phenomenal, it would be incredibly difficult to make those scenes better than they are already. The acting the movie had was one of the best parts about it.
The themes of this movie are relatable and common throughout your life. The themes of this movie mostly stay the same throughout the first 15 minutes. The themes include love, triumph, and hardship. The hardship he goes through is relatable, having someone always better than you, who eclipses all of your achievements. Losing something very special to you and others. All of these themes come together to make this a funny yet interesting movie.
Happy Gilmore can quickly switch from serious and can’t take your eyes off the screen to rolling around on the floor laughing. A good example of a tone switch in the movie is when Chubbs dies in the movie. Happy had killed the crocodile that had bit off Chubbs hand and showed it to Chubbs. In the movie Happy says “Remember the crocodile that got your hand, well I got his head”. Chubbs gets freaked out and then falls out the window. This is a good tone switch because the viewer thinks it's funny that Happy went so far to kill the crocodile that got Chubbs hand, but then it’s surprising when Chubbs falls out of the window. Then it’s sad because Chubbs was kind to Happy and it makes you wonder how he will ever get his grandmother’s house back. This section of the movie is the developing point for Happy where he has to go on his own to try to get his grandmother’s house back. This part is when the movie shows the hardship he has to go through on his long journey.
In conclusion, Happy Gilmore is one of the best ad funniest comedies of all time. It’s even more surprising when you realize it was made in 1996 and was a great movie for its time. This movie shows that a good comedy always has to have sadness in it and that life does too. With the return of the movie through Happy Gilmore 2 I expect and hope the new movie will be like this one. I rate this all time great movie a 9.5/10 stars. I couldn’t give it the full ten because no movie is going to be, “The perfect movie”. So if you’re feeling down because you had a bad day, watch this movie because it puts a smile on your face and teaches you that there is always sadness in life.
Keep watching,
Harry Brown
