Short n' Sweet

 February 24, 2025

Dear listeners,

Short, sweet and here to stay

Short n’ Sweet by Sabrina Carpenter is a pop album that will draw you in with stunning wordplay, and astounding beats; at the end, it will make you wish it was longer. Short n’ Sweet is about how when you are in love you put on “rose colored glasses," and how sometimes, the shortest relationships will leave you with the most emotional impact. Carpenter's album addresses an aspect of relationships that other albums have not previously touched on. I am absolutely raving about this, and have been listening to it on repeat since it dropped. I feel like it brings a whole new perspective to the world of music, so it deserves a five out of five stars.

Carpenter began to make music at a young age; at 12 years old, she competed in a singing contest called The Next Miley Cyrus Project and finished in third place. Though she did not win first place, she caught the attention of Disney executives. In 2013, Carpenter caught her big break: a main role in Disney Channel's Girl Meets World as Maya Penelope Hart. In 2014, Carpenter released her first single "Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying"; over the next couple of years, she released many more albums, coming to a grand total of six and one bonus track. Emails I Can’t Send was Carpenter's well known album before Short n’ Sweet. Emails I Can’t Send has 2,427,723,799 streams and is continuing to gain more. In my opinion, Short n’ Sweet is hands down the best album she has produced, showing a side of her never seen before.

Carpenter traveled across disco, country, and 2000’s pop in 36 short minutes. Coming from being engulfphed in a pop sphere, this artist's transition to having COUNTRY in her album is leaving fans reeling, in the best way possible. She has angled this album to attract female teens and young adults writing most if not all of her songs about romance. The innuendos hidden in the lyrics add a flirty bite to Carpenter's usually bubbly music. In her songs she plays instruments ranging from the piano, guitar, and even the banjo giving her music that distinct country twang. Using synth in her music she shows that you can be an influential modern singer but still have an appreciation for the old tunes.

Though there is controversy revolving around this album and a few other celebrities, it has not prevented Carpenter from winning many awards. Carpenter has gone on to win a Children’s Choice Award, two Grammy awards, including Pop Album of the Year and Song of the Year for her hit single "Espresso." Though "Espresso" was the song that pulled Carpenter into her stardom, her second hit single, "Please, Please, Please," propelled her into fame, becoming her first song to hit number one in the Hot 100 songs chart. In total, Carpenter has racked up an amazing 11 awards and that number is climbing. With her stardom starting in 2014, it goes to show that it takes 10+ years to become an "overnight success."

The themes that flow through this album include revenge, confidence, and the inability to find a good romantic partner. Her song "Slim Pickings" highlights this by saying, "A boy who's nice, that breathes, I swear he's nowhere to be seen." This goes to show that it is really difficult to find a good person to date these days; so many people focus on who you are relating to your socioeconomic status, your background, or other traits that truly do not matter at the end of the day. Carpenter would rather us focus on meaningful traits such as being there for one another, having good communication skills, and a willingness to work on oneself.

Sabrina Carpenter's Short n’ Sweet will be remembered as a spicy, comical, and enthralling album that shows how one needs to be true to themselves in order to have more successful relationships. From being a Disney Channel star to having a full fledged adult music career, Carpenter proves to the world that young stars can grow into influential icons that transcend the eras. Short n’ Sweet has so many dramatic twists and turns that it makes you feel like you are seeing the world through Carpenter's eyes. If you want to experience this feeling, I suggest you pop in some earbuds and take a listen. I promise, you won't be disappointed.

Fondly,

Ari
