Carry On Review
Dear Viewers,
I watched the movie Carry On, and I loved it! Carry On is a fast paced thriller, starring Taron Egerton who won the Golden Globe Actor of the Year in 2020, and Jason Bateman, who has won 5 Golden Globes, and many other awards. The director, Jaume Collet Serra has directed many other action movies, including Non-Stop, The Commuter, and the Unknown. In 2016, Serra’s film The Shallows was a nominee for Best Film and Director.
Carry On is about a TSA officer named Ethan Kopek (Taron Egerton) who is at his checkpoint when “The Traveler” (Jason Bateman) threatens to kill his girlfriend if Ethan doesn’t let luggage carrying a nerve agent through his checkpoint. Ethan is applying to the police department for the second time after getting rejected, so after the luggage gets through his checkpoint, he goes to stop it. But with the life of his girlfriend still on the line, what should he do?
I love how this movie explores the dilemma of either saving a loved one or the lives of hundreds of strangers. To make the dilemma even harder to decide the answer to, Kopek’s girlfriend is pregnant. Throughout this movie, Kopek keeps the goal of being a police officer in his mind, letting that drive him through the whole movie.
Carry On is able to string together tons of plot twists, and each one gnaws your stomach. My favorite important plot twist in this movie is when Kopek points a gun at “The Traveler”, the traveler tells him that he can disarm the bomb, but instead he makes the time until it blows up shorter. This is a great plot twist because it changes the whole trajectory of the movie.
From the very beginning, Carry On keeps a strong grasp on your attention, and it does that all the way to the very end. Collet-Serra puts together a perfect introduction in a dark setting, with an arms deal going down. It leaves the viewers begging to get an explanation for why an unseen man buys a strange looking weapon, and when and where he might use it. Collet-Serra also manages to put the climax at the very end of the movie, but the build up to it is perfect.
This movie has many similarities to one of Collet-Serra’s other movie called Non-Stop. The similarities between these to movies isn’t hard to see, with terrorists and horrifying weapons being used to make a statement by killing the plane’s passengers. Additionally, the main characters of both Carry On and Non-Stop are both aspiring for better jobs and so they never give up on saving the people.
Carry On is a very engaging and sometimes confusing movie, and I have watched it at least five times, trying to make sense of the little details that might sometimes be a little bit confusing. When you watch this movie, I recommend you to forget all of the other things you are doing and pay attention because if you miss a few details, the movie won't make sense. One detail that you are very likely to miss is when Kopek switches the suitcases from the one with the bomb in it to a random one with nothing in it.
In this movie, the main character Ethan Kopek is a dynamic, constantly changing person. In the beginning, he is an average man, with a girlfriend and a baby on the way, living paycheck to paycheck, and failing time and time again to get a promotion at his TSA job. Throughout the movie, Kopek develops into a confident and brave man, who can show up under pressure. Additionally, he learns to put other’s lives before his, and that is the main thing that shapes his character in this movie.
In my opinion, this is one of the best movies I have ever watched, so you need to put down your things and watch it right now!
Sincerely,
Henry Howe
