Lost in the future: The Electric State review
Dear readers,
The Electric State movie came out on March 14, 2025 and has already changed the way we view the future. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt this film hit number 1 on the English film charts quickly reaching over 74 million views in only the first half of 2025. Based on the illustrated novel by Simon Stålenhag, The Electric State film is a visually creative sci-fi drama that blends retro-futuristic elements with deep emotional impact.
Set in a dystopian version of America in the 1990’s littered with the remaining parts of robots after a war that eventually broke the society, the story follows a teenage girl played by Millie Bobby Brown who sets out across the American West with a small mysterious robot companion in search of her missing brother. Along the way, she meets a drifter portrayed by Chris Pratt, who was a soldier in the war. Together they team up to stop the evil company who captured her brother and save the future.
Millie Bobby Brown who plays Michelle in the film had her movie debut at a young age. Her role as Eleven in Stranger Things became extremely successful quickly gaining her popularity across the world, but her career didn’t stop there as she rose to fame earning two prime time Emmy nominations. At only age 21 Brown is one of the most successful child actresses and is extremely popular across the world, influencing many young people to follow their dreams.
The Electric State incorporates many universal themes throughout the plot; including, the loss of humanity, loneliness, and companionship. Set in connection to the haunting retro-futuristic world imagined by Stålenhag, the film focuses heavily upon the emotional fallout of society and technology taking over our minds. Although the film includes many themes of a decaying version of our world taken by devices, the core of this story is less about machines and more about the bonds you make in difficult times and the sacrifices you are willing to make for the people you love. The themes of this film evolve as the characters develop a stronger connection and their feelings go from loneliness and fear to bravery and companionship.
In The Electric State, one important scene shows Michelle traveling through the desert beside the giant broken robots left behind from the war. I chose this scene to write about because it clearly shows the movie’s main theme about how technology can separate people instead of bringing them together. The empty desert and faded colors in this scene has made the world feel lonely and abandoned. These details reflect on how Michelle feels inside-sad, isolated, and searching for hope that her brother is alive. This moment also shows her character development. Instead of giving up, she becomes more determined to find her brother and keep moving forward. By focusing on this scene, viewers can understand that the movie is not just about robots or action, but about human connection, loss, and the importance of not losing hope in a broken world.
In conclusion, The Electric State is more than just a sci-fi movie about robots and a broken world; it is a powerful story about adventure, hope, and the importance of real human connection. Through Michelle’s journey across a lonely and broken America, we see how technology can separate people, but also how courage and friendship can bring them back together. The film’s emotional scenes, strong performances, and meaningful themes make it both exciting and heartfelt. Overall, The Electric State is a film that reminds us that even in the darkest of times, we can choose hope and never give up on the people, or robots we care about.
Yours Truly,
Naomi
